If the life insurance was paid out only to the survivng spouse and the dependents, since they were listed as the beneficaries, is the surving spouse obligated to give money to the deceased’s family members?

I am thinking about buying accidental death and dismemberment insurance. Good or bad idea? Have you had any good or bad experience with any life insurance companies? Denied claims? Fine Print? If so, please explain and tell me which company. My mom is very sick with Multiple Sclerosis and she has a lot of bills. Will I be stuck with them?
